One of my best finds in about 2years is a Canadian duo who go by the name 'Azari & III'. The best way to describe their sound is disco ballad//future disco/underground pop (as made famous by Seth Troxler), which is a sincere tribute or reinvention of the classic huge room disco sound. Their vocals transform the music into an honest artistic expression of true human emotion. Look up 'Reckless With Your Love' and 'Hungry For The Power' for examples of instant modern classics.

I'm a big fan of female vocals on a track, because they often add some strength/gentleness/passion to whatever beat they're accompanied with. This pairing of the melancholic, sultry, almost story teller vocals with the laid back midnight disco beat is a huge success in my books. There are moments of pure brilliance where your emotions are escalated by the subtlest of tempo changes and peaks, which i consider the marks of a true deep house classic. In the midst of all the royal hoopla, i came across an interesting photo-essay about all the independent record stores that have closed their doors in recent times. The seemingly obvious cause of this down-turn could be pinned on the digital age and people turning to Itunes etc. However it made me think about a certain South African House music producers Facebook status. It read "Blogs Suck", i remember feeling somewhat guilty when i saw that post but quickly re-grouped and remembered why i started this blog.

Its all nice and easy to blame the Internet, blogs, online music stores for the lack of EPs and LPs being bought but one thing that dj's and producers seem to forget is that the Internet has made them accessible. I was fortunate enough to frequent a record store when i first discovered house music, and there really is no way of recreating the magical mood of that store . However i also recall how intimidating it was looking through stacks upon stacks of vinyl and not knowing what was what and which new producers to try out.
Fast forward to the present day, where i HOPE Johnny Fidget has become a place for people to try out new sounds, producers, sub-genre's and find out about some of Jhb's underground events.

The truth is producers need blogs, probably less than bloggers depend on producers; but bloggers all around the world are responsible for the enormous growth of house from a very niche type of market to something enjoyed by all people with decent Internet access. Let me emphasise that my reason for blogging is not to maliciously take away the food from producers mouths, but to hopefully expose them to a wider crowd that will appreciate their music and in turn continue to support their favourite producers by buying their music.
In that spirit, as a community lets try imagine a world without the music we so love and which has provided the soundtrack to many nights out, bleak right? Now lets step into the shoes of the artists and empathise. They need to eat too right? Support the artists!

WMC, Ultra, Miami Music Week, whatever: It's all just "doing Miami," as RA's Will Lynch found out over the course of 120 hours in Florida late last month.

Dance music in Miami usually conjures up two big names: Ultra Music Festival and the Winter Music Conference. But there's a third event that draws tens of thousands of people to the city every year––a constellation of parties with no official backbone, and therefore no real title (most people just say "Miami," as in "how many years have you done Miami?"). For a long time it was considered an unofficial part of WMC, something that changed with this year's split. But truth be told, the connection had long been a tenuous one: over the years, the parties took on a life of their own, forming a kind of shadow conference that eclipsed WMC itself. (One person I spoke with said he'd done Miami every year since 2002, and only set foot in the actual conference once, and then just because he figured he might as well.) RA's William Rauscher likened "Miami" to a pulsating, constantly evolving amoeba. The fact that this year's amoeba remained so healthy despite the Ultra/WMC split shows what an independent organism it really is.

The Sunflower Fund was formed in 1999 in support of the SABMR and was inspired by Chris Corlett and Darren Serebro’s heroic struggle against leukemia. It was formed by parents whose children had contracted leukemia, and in some cases had lost their battle against it. Their aim was to secure financial support in order to increase the number of bone marrow stem cell donors in South Africa.

The Sunflower Fund aims to educate and recruit a viable source of well-informed potential bone marrow stem cell donors who are ethnically diverse, in an effort to save the lives of those needing a transplant when suffering from life-threatening blood disorders. It strives to maintain the associated donor records of the South African Bone Marrow Registry.

Today the dance community mourns the passing of one of its own. Brett Jackson, a South African deep house legend, lost his battle to Hodgkins Lymphoma Cancer at the age of 28. One of the first house compilations I got was 'The Deeper Sounds Of Brett Jackson' and I remember not fully appreciating it at the time because it was too deep, especially considering the electro boom around that time. However I recall days when it would come up on my playlist and I eventually got to appreciate it fully, now as I listen to it, its even more poignant and spin-worthy than ever. Below is one of my favourite tracks off that album. R.I.P

Seth Troxler has to be one of the most talented producers out there, I'm going to put this out in the universe and hope it works as with Stimming and Jimpster. Could someone (read: Lighthouse booking agent) please bring Mr Troxler to South Africa. This time he delivers an eerie and ominous techno odyssey, which also manages to have somewhat of a playful tone, mainly because of the xylophone sounding beat. Another interesting fact is that this production is presented under his 'Thrill Cosby' moniker, he continues to be cool!

This is quite an old banger, but the choppy techno style of this track caught my attention, theres so many layers to this track, which make each break a new discovery. The best element of the track has to be that intense bass belly that is gives the track such a funky feel. While i'd come to expect only chilled tracks from I:Cube, this was a refreshing break from all the down-tempo stuff I've been jamming.

RA News: Stimming preps second album, Liqourice

Hamburg-based producer Martin Stimming will release his next album, Liquorice, this March.

As a linchpin of Diynamic Music, Stimming is known for his upbeat and often club-ready style of tech house. But Liqourice shows a different side of the producer; hardly any of the tracks ride a 4/4 beat, and most of them rely heavily on field recordings, giving the album an experimental feel. "I kind of sneaked around the normal bassdrum/clap or snare combination," he says. "I only tried to express the feelings I had during this time... without thinking of what will happen with it or who's gonna buy it."

The mood, too, is more somber than usual, a change Stimming attributes to the personal crisis during which he produced much of the album. "I had to sleep on the couch in my 16 square metre studio, certain circumstances didn't allow me to sleep at home." Though he didn't go into further detail on the matter, the song title "Me Against the Bitch" speaks volumes.

As for the album title, Stimming says its an acknowledgment of the fact that the record isn't for everyone. "I called it Liquorice because I simply love real liquorice sweets (all kinds actually), and I have realised that it's something someone loves or hates. There's not much middle ground, and there were probably 50% who like it and the others don't."

Last night while at a varsity rugby game, I was shocked to see how young the first year students looked. It got me thinking about how young and lost I must have looked. Luckily my mate ando was next to me as I was reminiscing and he reminded me of this beautiful remix by Brabe or Phtps of the Foals 'Electric Bloom'. I remember first listening to it in the truth parking lot (around 2008) while trying to finish a bottle of vodka between the both of us, oh the folly of youth hahaha. Anyway I decided this atmospheric minimal banger deserved a re-post, after all it was responsible for my discovery of the Foals. Enjoy

I'm probably going to get in major trouble for this post, but here goes. 2010 was a great year for house in South Africa, mainly because of the talented duo: Liquideep. When they released their first single 'fairytale' it was an immediate hit and people speculated as to whether they had just got lucky. However, upon listening to their album and the realease of their 2nd and 3rd singles, its clear that they are here to stay. This particular track is my favourite and its beautifully african, with amazingly soulful vocals.

I've been hanging onto this one for some time now, when you listen to it, you'll feel a bit protective of it and even selfish. Its a beautiful banger by Monika Kruse, the super talented producer was recently in our country and played a set I wont soon forget. This track however embodies the whole spirit of the underground, its a subtle ode to the rebellious masses seeking nothing but reckless abandon. I've only discovered the genius that is Seth Troxler and after listening to this absolute banger, i found myself obsessed with getting everything this man has made. To be fair this track is a collaboration of efforts, but it was enough to get me into Troxler frenzy. This track is a loaded deep minimal banger that keeps you hanging, hoping for more and it delivers with the darkest and yet lighthearted vocals. You'll have this on repeat for a while. I must admit that while I only blog about tracks that excite me, it's been a while since I've been so genuinely excited that I held onto a track for too long. This track isn't new at all but just wait till you hear it, deep-tech at its absolute best, the vocals seem somewhat divorced from the soulful melody of the beat, which only serves to emphasise it's perfection. There are days when I spend so much time listening to music that every song starts to sound the same. When I first gave Pezzners' new LP: The Tracks Are Alive, I was in a daze where everything was sounding all the same. Don't get me wrong, I wouldn't have been listening to it unless it was decent, however as I was wading through the album, this track caught my attention and snapped me out of my lucid dream. The production on this track is so crafty, there's this subtle build up through out the duration of this track that doesn't really erupt into anything. While that would have annoyed me a while back, I've found a new appreciation for actually just listening to a tune without anticipating the 'drop', try it you might hear things you've been missing.

Please excuse my repetitiveness, as it is necessary, I had to have two separate posts dedicated to musical genius. Yes Pezzner again with another winner from his LP/ Album. This time round, expect atmospheric, spaced out yet soulful beats with hauntingly beautiful vocals. There's nothing bad to say about this track, I've also included a remix by Lusine that is so technically pleasing that I've abused it, It's a techier take on the song and the repetition only serves to emphasise the beauty of the original. Greetings fellow lovers of house, first up, apologies for the silence, i've been maxing out by the coastline, recharging and generally taking a break from everything. The best thing about this break is that the it has given me a new appreciation for house music. My ears are once again alert to the little beats, snares, drums that had become lost in the blur of excess. I'm back and promise to bring you more, better, more current music.
